Social Justice In Our World Today
Hello to all!

As the new year rolls around I hope that everyone is doing well and in a good place mentally, physically, and spiritually. As COVID continues to exist in our lives there is no denying the changes that it has brought to all of us in the past year. From being in the field of social work it has become evident that many from all walks of life are either struggling or know someone who is struggling from symptoms of anxiety or depression brought about by this new normal that we are living in.

I would like to inform you all that starting December 29th, I will be holding office hours on Tuesday and Thursdays from 6pm-8pm where I will open up 20 minute time slots for anyone who would like to meet and discuss anything with me that they feel a social worker could be of assistance with. All meetings will take place via google meet and all I ask is that you let me know in advance that you would like to meet so we can determine a time that works best for us. All communication will remain confidential and all are welcome to reach out.

If you would like to schedule a time to meet with me or have any questions please feel free to email me at austin.walters@stonybrook.edu, or call/ text me at 631-972-5384. Again I wish all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your families!

"5 Senses" Mindfulness Exercise
This widely used mindfulness exercise is excellent in any situation where you need to quickly ground yourself. If you happen to find your mind wandering off and need to refocus, this exercise will help bring you back to your present situation.

Using your present surroundings, ask yourself these 5 questions.

1) What are 5 things you can see?

2) What are 4 things you can feel?

3) What are 3 things you can hear?

4) What are 2 things you can smell?

5) What is 1 thing you can taste?
